Dehumidifier full…again!

Living in such an old house near the ocean, this was bound to happen and some point.

Oh a warm summer afternoon, I noticed some dark spots on the wall of my closet. I did not want to think the worst, but I knew it wasn’t good! I could tell that it was either mold or mildew, but I didn’t want to find out for myself. I called my landlord and she showed up almost immediately Good news was that it was only mildew and not dangerous to my health. I was not sure how to treat this kind of thing, but my landlord told me that she would handle it. I was instructed to take everything out of my closet and leave the house for the day. I did as I was told and when I returned, there was a brand new dehumidifier in my room! The dehumidifier is used to remove moisture from the air and prevents the growth of mold and mildew. Living in such an old house near the ocean, this was bound to happen and some point. I knew that the house was old and that the moisture levels were high due to the location, but not until the dehumidifier did I realize how much moisture. After one day, my dehumidifier had gathered an entire gallon of water from the air! I thought that maybe there was just a lot of moisture in the air due to the recent rain and warm weather, but it turns out that my dehumidifier collects that much water each day. It is so crazy to think that without the dehumidifer, the moisture just sits in the air, or is absorbed by our clothes and furniture.

Windstorm resulting in leaves in the HVAC

I had never had a problem with the HVAC at my new house until recently.

The local weather channel had warned us of a windstorm that would be coming through the area.

I usually disregard these kinds of alerts due to the dramatics that are presented on the local news stations. The new HVAC was built to withstand hurricane force winds. We selected this specific model due to this feature. I did not think about the possibility of a common wind storm in the area. Recently, we had a storm come through with winds of 70 miles per hour. The businesses and schools in the area closed early due to this storm. Because I have kids now, I decided to take this more seriously that I normally would. There was a time in my 20s where I actually stayed in my rental house that was 2 blocks from the ocean during a hurricane. The new house had just had a new HVAC installed. After the storm, we decided to do a thorough inspection of the property to ensure that there were no trees down or parts missing from the house. The only damage we had was a small plant that was knocked over on the back porch. The HVAC was full of leaves due to the wind, and we had to call the HVAC maintenance company to clear them out. The HVAC company sent a technician out immediately and he was able to fix the problem.

Researching what HVAC may be best for you

When purchasing a new HVAC system, there are many factors to consider. It is important to remember to always use a professional. An HVAC system can be a huge investment and you will want to leave the little details up to a professional. Price, size of the house, and region of the world are all huge factors to consider. Many HVAC companies will come to your home and do an inspection for you. This inspection will allow the HVAC techs to become familiar with any specific type of HVAC you may need or require. After this inspenced, they will provide you with an estimate. A lot of people will have several companies do their inspections and then choose the HVAC company that quotes them the least amount of money to get the job done. If you want, you can even attempt to do the repair on your own. This is advised against. If you have a friend who is an HVAC tech, you could consult them about this. They will tell you to leave it to the professionals and do not attempt to do this on your own. It is very important to do a lot of research when considering buying a new HVAC system. If you go for the wrong thing, you could be stuck with a unit that you do not utilize because of the region you live in. Anything that you spend this much money on should be handled by professionals.

Budget and the temperature of the Air Conditioner

The cooler weather will allow us to use the AC units less frequently, allowing our energy bill to lower even more

Although we may not consider the monthly utilities bill to be much of a financial burden, once you start a budget and really look into what you are paying for, you might be surprised. I recently moved into a smaller house with window unit air conditioners, and I have been very surprised at how much I have saved on my monthly utility bill. It is easy to control the temperature of each room with the window unit air conditioners. While I am away at work, I turn each of the units to 75 degrees. Usually when I return from work, I will the living room and bedroom units down to 70. This keeps the house cool and comfortable. We have a spare room as well. For this AC unit, I keep it on 75 degrees at all times. When we have a guest, they are free to set the AC to whatever temperature is comfortable for them. It is nice to be able to offer this option to guests. I am excited for the cooler weather to roll in. The cooler weather will allow us to use the AC units less frequently, allowing our energy bill to lower even more. It is important to take a little extra time in your morning or before you leave the house to consider the temperature of the house. Even though it may seem like a small task, this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Dehumidifier full of mildew

Oh a hot Summer afternoon, I noticed some dark spots on the wall of my closet.

I did not want to believe the worst, although I knew it wasn’t good! I could tell that it was either mold or mildew, although I didn’t want to find out for myself.

I was not sure how to treat this kind of thing, but my proprietor told me that she would handle it. I was instructed to take everything out of my closet and leave the house for the day. I did as I was told and when I returned, there was a brand modern dehumidifier in my room! The dehumidifier is used to remove moisture from the air and prevents the growth of mold and mildew, but living in such an aged house near the ocean, this was bound to happen and some point. I knew that the house was aged and that the moisture levels were high due to the location, but not until the dehumidifier did I realize how much moisture. Dehumidifier full of course

Oh a moderate summer time afternoon, I noticed some dark spots on the wall of my closet.

I did not want to suppose the worst, however I knew it wasn’t good! I could tell that it was either mold or mildew, however I didn’t want to find out for myself.

I called my landlord plus she showed up almost instantly Good news was that it was only mildew plus not dangerous to my health. I was not sure how to treat this kind of thing, but my landlord told me that she would handle it. I was instructed to take everything out of my closet plus leave the apartment for the day. I did as I was told plus when I returned, there was a brand new dehumidifier in my room! The dehumidifier is used to remove moisture from the air plus prevents the growth of mold plus mildew, but living in such an old apartment near the ocean, this was bound to happen plus some point. Our HVAC System Is Really Sensitive

My husband is naturally a warm sleeper.

No matter what we do, his body overheats in the middle of the night, causing me to overheat too because I lay beside him.

All his body heat gets trapped under the covers and it’s impossible to escape. I’m not someone who can sleep when they’re too warm, so this creates a big issue for me. I’ve tried turning on the overhead fan or adding portable fans beside the bed, but I discovered that these make me sick. All the direct, cool air being blown onto my face isn’t good for me. I contemplated turning the temperature down on the thermostat, but our HVAC system is so sensitive. I can turn the temperature down one degree and it feels like an ice box, but if I turn the temperature up one degree it feels like I’m living in a furnace. I don’t know why the HVAC system is like this. Adjusting the thermostat by a single degree either way should not lead to an extreme temperature. If it were just me and my husband, then I’d probably turn the temperature down. However, our baby sleeps in the room next to us and I worry that she’s too cold or too warm. I don’t want her to be uncomfortable, even if I am. I’d rather be the one that’s too warm or too cold instead of her. For this reason, I’m going to continue sweating at night until I can find an alternative solution to the inconsistent temperatures.

I Just Wanted a Traditional Thermostat

My thermostat chose the perfect time to die.

It died during a moderate time of year, so I wasn’t left with a freezing cold or smoking hot house.

Because the temperature was so moderate, I had time to find a new thermostat. I wasn’t rushed to buy something new and have it installed right away. One Saturday afternoon, I went to the local hardware store to check out what they had available in the thermostat department. While I was browsing the selection, a salesman approached me and asked if I needed help. I kindly said no thank you, because I already knew what kind of thermostat I wanted. I was planning on getting a traditional thermostat, nothing fancy. The salesman saw my response as an opportunity to try and sell me a smart thermostat instead, which was twice as much money. I’d researched smart thermostats during my free time, but I knew I’d never use it enough to spend that kind of money on it. The salesman continued to press me on the details of the smart thermostat anyway. He told me all about the energy efficiency, how I could control it from my phone, and how much money I’d save over time. When he was finally done speaking, I told him that I only wanted the traditional thermostat because it was simple and all I needed. I knew how to run my HVAC system properly and I wasn’t interested in paying more. I don’t think he appreciated my response, but I did tell him from the beginning that I wasn’t interested.

The Difference Between a Central HVAC System and a Heat Pump

After living in their home for 13 years, it was time for my parents to update their HVAC system.

I saw them spend a lot of time researching various heat and air equipment, trying to find the best option.

My dad even spoke on the phone with at least 3 different HVAC professionals about their situation. There’s no telling how many more he called when I wasn’t around. When I asked them what they were planning to do, they said they had two options. They could either replace both their furnace and air conditioner separately, which was considered their central HVAC system, or they could install a heat pump. I didn’t know what the difference was, so my dad explained it to me in simple terms. In a central HVAC system, the air conditioner was responsible for cooling, while the furnace was responsible for heating. Neither the air conditioner or furnace could do the opposite. For instance, an air conditioner could only cool and a furnace could only heat. A heat pump could do both heat and cool. My dad showed me pictures of both the outside units for a central HVAC system and a heat pump and I couldn’t tell the difference. They looked very similar! I asked him if there was a difference in energy or efficiency and he assured me that there wasn’t. They currently had a central HVAC system, so they were leaning toward keeping the existing plan and just updating it. My dad thought it would be easier.

A Furnace Uses 3 Times More Energy

Despite the fact that I run my air conditioner all day long during the summer, it’s still cheaper to run compared to my heat.

  • I made this discovery during my first winter in this house.

After running my AC all summer long, I managed my monthly utility bills just fine. I didn’t have any problems paying the bills that arrived each month, so I continued running my furnace at the same capacity when winter rolled around. When I got my first utility bill after running my furnace, I was shocked! My initial reaction was to call the local HVAC company and have them come service my HVAC equipment again. Something had to be terribly wrong with my furnace, even though an HVAC professional had just serviced it a few weeks prior. I basically paid for nothing, because the HVAC professional assured me that nothing was wrong with my furnace. However, a furnace used 3 times more energy to heat a home compared to air conditioning. Since I had the furnace running constantly and at a higher temperature, my energy costs were higher. When I showed him my utility bill, he nodded and said that it looked normal if I was running my furnace as much as I was. The HVAC professional suggested that I try running my furnace a few degrees lower. I have no choice but to take his suggestion, because I can’t afford to keep paying such a high utility bill all winter.
