I am always cold in my new home

When I lived in a previous home with my wife I was regularly the right temperature.

I realize now that the new home heating and cooling method wasn’t all that great. In particular the cooling function was the problem. It couldn’t keep the 1000 square foot new home cool at all. I am someone who is regularly cold though. I was glad to have a space a little warm. On top of that, I had my bed stand on an exterior wall that got hit by sunshine in the afternoon. I invested in a summer comforter. I splurged getting a lightweight quilt with a unique pattern. It was just enough to have weight on me however without providing any extra heat. Well now that I live in a home that has a better central air conditioner, my summer quilt never gets a turn. I tried it one summer and just froze my butt off. My wife is ecstatic to finally have a heating and A/C component that can handle the home. I set the thermostat quite high when I go to bed. I choose to have our home around 73 degrees. It doesn’t seem to matter though, then the A/C almost lingers in my home office. I also have tons of windows and brick floors that seem to make the space colder. I also realized that I share the wall with the heating and A/C closet. I am basically sitting next to the air conditioner. I have to use my winter comforter all year long now. I might need to throw out my summer quilt. It just doesn’t have a purpose anymore.

Summer quilt is never used anymore

When I lived in an apartment with my boyfriend I was always the right temperature.

I realize now that the apartment heating and cooling system wasn’t all that great.

On top of that, I had my bed sit on an exterior wall that got hit by sunshine in the morning. I invested in a wintertime and summer comforter. I splurged getting a really cute, lightweight quilt with a flower pattern. It was just enough to have weight on me but without providing any extra heat. Well now that I live in a home that has a better central air conditioner, my summer quilt never gets a turn. I tried it one summer and just froze my butt off. My boyfriend is ecstatic to finally have a HVAC unit that can handle the home. I set the thermostat quite high when I go to bed. I choose to have our home around 74 degrees. It doesn’t seem to matter though. The AC almost lingers in my bedroom. I also have tons of windows and tile floors that seem to make the space colder. I might need to throw out my summer quilt. It just doesn’t have a purpose anymore.

Having indoor air quality issues due to roommate

Beggars can’t be choosers, that is what I keep telling myself.

I purchased a beach house that was a bit out of our price range.

Then I realized that I could not afford the mortgage payment without supplemental income. I did not want to get a second job so I got a roommate instead. I needed a roommate fast and unfortunately had to turn to people looking online for one. I got a guy named Carl that was able to transport in the same week, but he isn’t the worst roommate in the world, he is just odd and sort of disruptive. He likes playing heavy metal legitimately late in the evening and video games early in the day. He eats odd food and leaves his clothes lying around everywhere. He is a legitimately big presence in our house. I could live with all those things however his smoking is killing me. I have told him not to smoke in our house, it will yellow our walls and ruin our curtains, but not to mention that odor gets into our HVAC duct and then the heating and air conditioning disturbs it throughout the house. So every room smells like an ashtray. I don’t want the polluted indoor air conditions and the second hand smoke! Carl swears he lights up outside however there is no way. I am low on funds but I know I am going to need to buy an whole- house air purifier to combat the fumes. I need to disinfect our indoor air conditions so it does not smell. I want to make Carl buy it however I am kind of scared of him.

energy saving tips

How to stay cool without air conditioning

Being unable to afford air conditioning or wanting to save more by using it less is a normal circumstance for some of us. Some people would go see a movie, take a drip in the pool or visit an air conditioned public facility to find relief from hot summer temperatures. But the pandemic has rendered those remedies inaccessible in many places and more people are staying home. However, there are ways to feel comfortable without cranking the air conditioning unit or going without AC all together. Hydrating yourself is the first and foremost step in cooling down. Taking a cold shower or bath helps cool your body by lowering your core temperature. Placing a cold wash rag on your wrists or draping it around your neck to cool your body is a good idea for quick relief. Place box fans facing out of the windows of rooms you are spending time in to blow out hot air and replace it with cold air inside. If the weather in your area tends to fall between 50 and 70 degrees fahrenheit in the mornings and evenings, open the windows during those times to facilitate a cross flow ventilation system. The outdoors can pull the hot air from your home, leaving a cooler temperature or bringing in the breeze. Just be sure to close windows as the sun comes out, then open them when the weather is cool again. If you have windows that face the sun’s direction in the morning through afternoon, close the curtains or blinds over them to keep the sun from directly coming into the house and heating up the inside. You could also install blackout curtains to insulate the room and reduce temperature. These are a few ways to stay cool inside. You never know when mother nature can cause a power outage leaving you with no air conditioning.

You have to replace the UV-C bulbs in your HVAC system once a year

There have been a variety of products released over the last year that promised to help consumers sanitize their home, car, and belongings from the COVID-19 virus.

  • Some of the cleaning solutions and sanitizing sprays that promise to kill mold, bacteria, and viruses are great if you can afford them, but I can’t say the same thing for every other pandemic related product.

There were these green cards that people were wearing around their necks on long lapels and they allegedly worked like mosquito repellent, but for the COVID virus. Obviously they didn’t do anything, but it didn’t stop people using them in varying parts of the world. People did the same thing with UV light and phones, making these “UV tanks” that supposedly sanitize every inch of your cell phone. The only problem is that most of them are so poorly designed that the UV light doesn’t actually reflect in the way they say it does, meaning some parts of your phone will never get as much light as others. That’s why you see so many of these “UV tanks” in clearance racks at supercenters, because people realize the cheaper ones are junk. But UV light alone is a legitimate way to sanitize indoor spaces, especially air systems. I have UV-C bulbs in my air handler that are cleaning my air as it moves through my air conditioning system. Aside from sanitizing the air, they also prevent microbial growth from appearing inside the air handler. This gives you a cleaner air system for much longer than without the UV-C bulbs. You just have to replace the bulbs once a year, otherwise they lose all of their power.
